India: how gratuity works
Gratuity is a lump sum your employer pays when you leave after long service. The formula uses 26 working days a month, so 15/26 of a month’s wages for each year. Up to ₹20 lakh is tax-free for private-sector employees.
South Africa: severance pay
If you are retrenched, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act says you must get at least one week’s pay for each completed year of continuous service. It is not paid if you resign or are dismissed for misconduct.
