How the plan adds up
Trip fuel is flight time × burn rate. Contingency covers small surprises like unexpected headwinds, alternate fuel gets you to your diversion, and the final reserve is what you should still have when you land. Many pilots also add extra for weather, holding or training.
Fuel weight
Avgas weighs about 0.72 kg per litre (6.0 lb per US gallon) and Jet A-1 about 0.80 kg per litre (6.7 lb per US gallon), changing a little with temperature.
